LAKE LOUISE

Chikako at the Lake Agnes Tea House [188 Kb]

For many of the years between 1985 and 1993, we took the family to the Rockies where I attended a physics conference held each February at the Chateau Lake Louise. Our usual routine was to drive over the Coquihalla as far as Revelstoke, or sometimes staying with friends in Vernon, thus avoiding the drive over Rogers and Kicking Horse Passes after dark in winter conditions. The drive back home was usually done in a single day, aimimg for and boarding the 7 pm ferry. This plan was nixed one year however when we got held up on Rogers Pass for many hours while the Canadian Armed Forces shot down avalanches. Plenty of blankets and food in the car kept us comfortable, and we spent the night in Revelstoke once the highway reopened.

The conference was organized with morning and evening sessions, the afternoons being free for winter persuits. With all-you-can-eat buffet breakfasts and generous boxed lunches provided by the Chateau, there were plenty of calories for the more physical of those winter persuits. Our first year was limited to pulling the kids around on a sled and snowshoing up to Lake Agnes, but in subsequent years we all learned to cross-country ski (to a still-limited extent...) touring the 7.5 km Fairview Loop and the 12.6 km Pipestone Loop many times. There were also drives to Banff townsite and to the Columbia Icefields.
