OESCHINENSEE

Oeschinensee [218 Kb]

Oeschinensee is a popular subalpine lake located above Kandersteg, in the Bern Alps. A chairlift can be used to eliminate the 375 meter climb to the lake, but we have chosen to walk the trail from Kandersteg on both of our visits to this lake, first on 13 October 2002 and again on 19 October 2003. The trail reaches the west end of 1578 meter Oeschinensee near the lake's outlet and a restaurant. There are also some inns located nearby. In a col above the opposite side of the lake, Blüemlisalphütte can just barely be seen, 1262 meters above, and on my list of future hikes. Crowds can be expected at Oeschinensee on summer and early fall days, but they can be left behind by walking around the northern shoreline to the lake's northeast side, which also has better views. Another trail starts around the lake's south side before climbing to 2562 meter Fründenhütte, also on my ToDo list.

The trail to the northeast side of Oeschinensee climbs at a steady pace as it works its way across steep cliffs which drop precipitously into the lake. The views from the trail to the lake below and the mountains across are excellent. The sheer cliffs falling into the east side of the lake are particularly impressive. Fründenhütte, 984 meters above Oeschinensee, can be seen perched up on a rock below Fründenhorn. The trail enters a large open bowl as it leaves the lake at the far end. Not far beyond is the small inn Berghaus Underbärgli, elevation 1760 meters and a good spot to stop to enjoy the views back over the lake. This is where the trail starts its steep ascent to 2840 meter Blüemlisalphütte, but that walk will have to wait for another day.
