PFINGSTEGG

Cliffs of Mättenberg [243 Kb]

We drove up to Grindelwald on a crisp and clear autumn day, 2 November 2003, not really knowing what we would do once arrived. This was the last Sunday before our return to Canada. After enjoying a substantial lunch in town, we walked outside and had a look around at our options. The high country was already in snow. We had walked on a previous trip the low hillsides lying directly across the valley from Grindelwald, but decided it warranted a return visit.

Grindelwald from Pfingstegg [411 Kb]

After walking down to the valley floor to cross the river, we followed our noses through a network of trails and dirt roads, finally reaching the Pfingstegg cable lift station 400 meters above the valley bottom. Pfingstegg provided an excellent vantage from which to recall some of our earlier visits to the Jungfrau region, such as Kleine Scheidegg to our left at the base of the Eiger, and Grosse Scheidegg to our right at the base of Wetterhorn. After pondering over the view for about an hour, we descended back down to Grindelwald for supper, then drove back home to Genève.
