SHERBROOKE LAKE

Sherbrooke Lake [143 Kb]

We chose Sherbrooke Lake on 18 August 2003 as an easy destination with minimal elevation gain. The trail head is located just a few hundred meters west of Wapta lake in Yoho National Park, five kilometers west of Kicking Horse Pass. The most challenging part of this hike was finding the trail head, which doesn't seem to be posted on the highway. The trail remains in the forest for the three kilometers from the trail head, elevation 1616 meters, to Sherbrooke Lake, elevation 1814 meters. An alternative destination is Paget Lookout, the trail for which forks right from the lake trail about midway to the Lake.

Subalpine meadows beyond Sherbrooke Lake [323 Kb]

The trail continues along the lake's east shore, initially in trees with no views of the lake but eventually breaking into more interesting scenery. Beyond the lake, the trail ascends through a canyon cut by Niles Creek, passing a waterfall before entering an expansive subalpine meadow. We turned around at this point, but the trail can be followed for several more kilometers, leading to more alpine meadows below Mount Niles. As was the case with other hikes we did in August 2003, the air was hazy with smoke from the many forest fires burning at the time.
