Minutes of feedthrough meeting of 29 May, 2000. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Present: GV, Pof, MGF, PB, RM, MLenc, AD, RKK, TH *) Milestones: - Six T-piece glands arrived from CERN, however all showed signs of damage on the sealing surface. Albin Effernelli at CERN has been notified, and found similar damage on the glands still at CERN. Repairs of those glands will be made, and the six glands at UVIC will also be returned to CERN for repair. - The final thermal tests of feedthrough -1 at the cold station have been completed, using the anticipated production heater design complete with thermal conduction foam in place of thermal grease. All test results are consistent with FEA expectations. When run at half power (25 W) the heater maintains the coldest pin at 20 degrees C with the bellows volume at 1.5 bar. The highest temperature encountered during this test was 66 degrees C on a resistor case. - The bill for the first 100 FCI vacuum cables was paid today. *) The remaining 26 seal rings have still not been received from Sicom (they were expected ~25 May). *) The eight 7-row pincarriers reportedly shipped on 19 May have not arrived yet. Still no word on the delivery schedule for 8-row pincarriers. This is obviously becoming a major concern... *) It was agreed to hold production until the baseplane issue is resolved, which should certainly be done by the July LARG week. Those of us who are able bodied (feeble minded???) should sift through the various documents being circulated to ensure that the problem is fully understood. *) Terry will put the UVIC Ambient Flange Heater design on EDMS at CERN. *) It was agreed that we will proceed with production of FT0 (our first `production' feedthrough) regardless of whether or not a final decision has been reached on the Ambient Flange Heater. Note however (as indicated two items above) that we *will* wait until the baseplane issue is settled. *) Richard responded to Laurent regarding the request for 12 `spare' T47 pigtails with the following note: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Dear Laurent, I am sorry it has taken us so long to reply to your message. We have been very busy. We would like to help you out. We do have one very big problem: we have only ordered 15 spare T47 cables. This is very tight. After much consultation with Michel, we propose that Orsay coordinates the following: - EMEC orders (and eventually pays for) 12 T47 cables. - Orsay diverts 12 T47 cables from our order to them at the appropriate time. - Orsay sends us the 12 T47 new cables that were ordered for the EMEC when they are available. - Orsay insures that as far as we are concerned, we only perceive a change in the scheduling of the T47 procurement, that is we do not see any change in the paperwork, nor any confusion in the handling in our order. Orsay agrees that these 12 T47 be treated as part of our main order as far as QA is concerned (and replacement if a cable is faulty). Will this work for you? We hope it is helpful. Please contact one of us if you have any questions are wish to propose something else. Regards, Richard Keeler ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ *) A `summary of our readiness status', sent to Pierre Pailler for a progress report he will present on 2 June, is appended to the bottom of these minutes. *) Mark L. will consult with Ken Sexton at BNL regarding the Ambient Flange Heater wiring issues. *) The FT-1 will be removed from the cold-test station this week, after which some minor mods will be made to the cold-test station so that it can accept feedthroughs equipped with the production T-piece glands. Parts for this modification arrived on 29 May. *) Plans for July LARG week: - Terry will present the UVIC Ambient Flange Heater design, and also the results of the various tests that have been conducted (thermal tests, wet/dry warm/cold cycling). Terry will also discuss the weld plan. Note that we have received no reply from CERN regarding the last weld samples sent to them. - Pof will summarize our production readiness status, projected startup date, major problems (pincarrier deliveries...) and the FCI vacuum cable test results. *) In the category of future work to be done... An EDMS file for the FCI vacuum cables needs to be produced. This should be done in cooperation with Bob Hackenburg at BNL. We should aim to have some progress on this by the July LARG week. Agenda for next week: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ - Milestones - Status of cold-test station mods - RF seal order - Any news regarding ultrasonic bath? - pincarrier delivery schedule? - AOB ==================================================================== Progress Report for Pierre Pailler follows ==================================================================== Inventory of Parts (29 May 2000) ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Pin Carriers - 12 7-row and 14 8-row are in stock now, all tested and ok. Eight 7-row were reportedly shipped 19 May, and we are expecting a further shipments of eight 7-row pincarriers to UVIC every other week. The shipping schedule of the 8-row pincarriers remains uncertain. Glasseal, the pincarrier manufacturer, has not been forthcoming with information regarding the production delays. Although we presently have sufficient numbers of pincarriers to commence production, the long term supply of pincarriers to maintain our production schedule has become our primary concern. T-piece glands - Six in stock, but all show damage to sealing surface. T-piece glands still at CERN show similar damage. CERN will attempt to repair the sealing surface and send replacements ASAP. Ambient Flanges - 60 ambient flanges in stock, all ok. Cold Flanges - 60 cold flanges in stock, all ok. Bolt Rings - 61 in stock, all ok. Cuff Rings - 58 Cuff Rings in stock, 57 ok and remaining `failed' Cuff Ring possibly repairable. 32 of the Cuff Rings are at BOA for bellows manufacture, while the remaining 26 are stored at UVIC. Seal Rings - 34 Seal Rings in stock, 32 passed, 2 failed. The 32 `passed' Seal Rings are at BOA for bellows manufacture. 26 additional Seal Rings reportedly shipped to UVIC on 25 May. Bellows Assemblies - Six bellows in stock, all leak checked and ok. Delays are not anticipated for the remaining bellows assemblies. Funnel Bases - 66 Funnel Bases in stock, 65 ok, 1 failed. 65 good Funnel Bases are now at machine shop for Funnel Assembly manufacture. Lower Funnel Tubes - 62 Lower Funnel Tubes in stock, 60 ok, 1 failed. 60 good Lower Funnel Tubes are now at machine shop for Funnel Assembly manufacture. Funnel Assemblies - Four to be delivered to UVIC by 31 May, and 15 by 30 June. No problems foreseen receiving the balance of the inventory on time. Pigtail Cables - 207 in stock, all ok. The delivery schedule originally provided to us by ORSAY has slipped by several months, but we do have a sufficient supply of cables in stock to commence construction. Vacuum Cables - 100 in stock. All have been visually inspected, and tested for continuity, resistance, contact resistance, impedance, and cross talk. 99 passed, 1 failed due to lack of gold plating on edge of the springclip. No problems foreseen receiving the balance of the inventory on time. Other Issues ^^^^^^^^^^^^ Cleaning of Mechanical Parts ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ All mechanical parts (excluding the pincarriers or cables) are to be cleaned using an ultrasonic bath located at TRIUMF. A minor delay in this procedure has been encountered with the failure of the transducer in the ultrasonic bath. A replacement transducer has been ordered, and the ultrasonic bath is expected to be functional again by the second week of June. Electrical and Vacuum Test Equipment ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ All test apparatus have been commissioned and are functioning as designed. Ambient Flange Heater ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Terry Hodges will present a full report on the Ambient Flange Heaters during the July LARG week. Tests are currently underway to ensure that the heater resistors to be used on the Flange Heater will stand up to repeated wet/dry and warm/cold cycling. HEC Baseplane Issue ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Production of feedthroughs will be held until the symmetry issue regarding the baseplanes has been fully resolved. (Contact Chris Oram for information regarding the baseplane symmetry issue.) Tests to be Conducted at CERN ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Room temperature leak checks and electrical tests will be conducted immediately upon reception of the feedthroughs at CERN, as well as electrical tests after the feedthroughs have been welded on the cryostat. The test plans have yet to be finalized, but the electrical tests will entail resistance and/or continuity measurements, and also crosstalk measurements. Construction of apparatus for these electrical tests is underway. For the leak tests, it is assumed that CERN will provide the leak checker. Summary ^^^^^^^ *) All electrical and vacuum test apparatus are complete and functioning as designed. *) With the exception of the Bellows Assemblies and the Funnel Assemblies, all mechanical components (excluding pincarriers and cables) are now either all in hand or nearly all in hand. Six bellows assemblies are presently in stock, and four funnel assemblies are expected this week. We do not expect the delivery of either of these items to impede production. Minor delays have been encountered due to the breakdown of the ultrasonic bath, and also from the damage to the T-piece glands delivered by CERN. *) First delivery of 100 production Vacuum Cables from FCI was in early May, of which 99 cables passed inspection and tests. Delays in further delivery of Vacuum Cables is not anticipated. 207 Pigtail Cables are in stock, however delivery of Pigtail Cables from ORSAY has slipped by several months from original schedule. *) 12 7-row and 14 8-row Pincarriers are in stock, all but two of these from deliveries made in 1999. The delivery schedule has subsequently slipped, and the manufacturer (Glasseal) has been unable (or unwilling) to provide a revised delivery schedule which includes both 7-row and 8-row pincarriers. We regard this as the most critical item with the potential to delay production. *) The UVIC Ambient Flange Heater design will be presented at CERN by Terry Hodges during the July LARG week. We expect that any remaining questions regarding the heater design can be worked out then. *) The HEC baseplane issue needs to be resolved, hopefully during the July LARG week, before full production can commence. This is likely the final item to be resolved before production.
