CHRINDELLUN

Breithorn from Chrindellun [307 Kb]

Lötschental is a relatively isolated valley on the north side of the Rhône in the Swiss canton of Wallis (Valais). Aside from locals, this area is little visited by tourists, yet it has some fine scenery and nice walks to offer. From the parking lot at the end of the road, elevation 1780 meters, the walk up to Chrindellun on the north side of the valley is one such walk. With relatively minimal effort, one gains a vantage with excellent views to the valley below and mountains across. We did this hike on 13 July 2003, and returned to the area again later in the year to walk further up the valley to Anenhütte.

From the parking lot, the trail first leads to the small hamlet of Fafleralp, from where it starts switchbacking up through a wooded hillside. The views open up to the mountains across the valley as one gets higher. A level spot on top of a prominent knoll is reached at about four kilometers, elevation 2250 meters. There are some collapsed huts and a cross near the top of the knoll, and some avalanche breaks just below. The views from here are unobstructed looking up, down, and across the valley. I continued up from the knoll, first on a trail then off trail through meadows and scree, to about 2570 meters for some higher views. I was surprised to find about a dozen goats grazing on what little grass they could find.
