EXCELSIOR PASS SPRINGTIME
|
Excelsior Ridge [144 Kb]
|
Early spring hiking options are pretty limited in the Mount Baker area,
but I decided to try the
Excelsior Pass
trail starting from the
Mount Baker Highway trailhead. I had twice descended the 1130 meters on
that trail, but I'd never gone up.
There were patches of snow lingering as low down as Nooksack Falls, but I
was pleasantly surprised that the south-facing trail was snow free until
about midway up. Once the trail disappeared under the snow, I made good
use of my GPS to keep me on track, and ensured that my footsteps were
sufficiently visible to be followed on the way back down. I packed my snowshoes
all the way up, but the snow was crusty enough that I didn't bother putting
them on.
Excelsior Pass was cold and windy, but the views were great as usual.
I did this hike on April 28, 2009 and retuned
the following year a bit later in the season on July 6.
