Furka Pass [324 Kb]
|
Located at the headwaters of the Rhône River,
the 2429 meter Furka Pass is along the border
between the Swiss cantons of Valais and Uri.
The highway over Furka Pass is impressive, especially on the
west side of the Pass where the highway climbs a steep headwall
by a series of tight switchbacks.
Near the top, the highway comes within two hundred
meters of the Rhonegletscher, source of the Rhône River.
Views back down over the Rhône Valley are great.
Furka Pass is closed during the winter season, but there is
a railway tunnel under the pass which ferries cars from
one side to the other.
We passed over Furka Pass on 1 August 2003 on our way to
Susch,
and again two days later on our return trip
back to Geneva.
