GROSSE SCHEIDEGG

Wetterhorn and Grosse Scheidegg [283 Kb]

Grosse Scheidegg is mountain pass situated at the base of the impressive northwest face of Wetterhorn, five kilometers northeast of the resort town of Grindelwald in the Swiss canton of Bern. Grosse Scheidegg was the mid point of this hike, which started at the top of the First lift station, elevation 2167 meters. This was my second visit to First; we walked west from First to the top of the 2681 meter Faulhorn the summer before. The walk described here was done on 29 June, 2003.

Meadows near Grosse Scheidegg [439 Kb]

From First, the trail contours along meadow slopes below the 2928 meter Schwarzhorn, generally descending as it works its way toward Grosse Scheidegg. The impressive views across the valley toward the high peaks of Wetterhorn, Schreckhorn, and Eiger are in stark contrast to the rich green farmland extending from the valley bottom nearly up to the trail. About an hour after leaving First, we stopped at some large boulders about 100 meters above the trail and pulled out some wine and snacks to enjoy for a leisurely lunch break.

Hornseeli [275 Kb]

About a kilometer before reaching Grosse Scheidegg, I took a 2.5 kilometer side trip up to Hornseeli, a tiny alpine tarn at 2147 meters. After returning to the main trail we completed our descent to 1962 meter Grosse Scheidegg. While at the pass, we watched several loud avalanches pouring down the sheer face of Wetterhorn, only a few hundred meters away. From Grosse Scheidegg it's a 930 meter descent, mostly on gravel road, back down to Grindelwald, rösti, and beer.
