View from Jocelyn Hill [323 Kb]

Gowlland Tod Provincial Park occupies the high ridge overlooking
Finlayson Arm of Saanich Inlet.
The park, established in 1995, protects some much needed hiking
trails for the residents of nearby Victoria.
Jocelyn Hill, 434 meters, is the highest point in the park,
and can be approached from either the north or the south.
The southern Ridge Top Trail provides some great views down to Saanich Inlet
along the way, so this is the approach I usually take.
From it's Caleb Pike trailhead, the trail runs about 4 km
over several minor summits before reaching the summit of Jocelyn Hill, with an
accumulated elevation gain of about 450 meters for the return trip.

Views from the open summit of Jocelyn Hill are excellent, with Victoria
and Esquimalt nearby to the southeast and the Olympic Mountains
across Juan de Fuca Strait to the south.
Another vantage point a few hundred meters to the north
provides sweeping views of Saanich Peninsula and the Southern Gulf Islands.
Like on many of the rocky knolls in the Victoria area, manzanita grows around
the summit of Jocelyn Hill, along with arbutus, pine, and Douglas-fir.
Ravens and turkey vultures are also often seen here.
