NORTH RIM

The Grand Canyon was the third of the National Parks we visited in the Southern Utah and Northern Arizona area during the summer of 2006. We had hiked the Peekaboo Loop trail at Bryce Canyon and toured Zion Canon the previous two days. We checked out of our townhouse in Kanab Utah and drove towards North Rim at the edge of the Grand Canyon where we would spend the night in one of the many rustic cabins operated by Grand Canyon Lodge. Rather than drive directly to the lodge, we took a side road four kilometers before North Rim and stopped at several of the viewpoints along the Point Imperial and Cape Royal Roads.

We arrived at the Grand Canyon Lodge at 4 pm, just in time to check in to our cabin, and with just enough time to walk out to Bright Angel Point before taking our dinner reservation at the lodge. As recommended, the reservation had been made months earlier. After supper, we sat on the balcony outside the lodge and watched a lightning storm raging over the South Rim as daylight dwindled. The rest of the family remained watching the storm while I returned to our cabin to start preparing for the next day's early departure and long trip home. They were soon trapped in the lodge however as the storm reached the North Rim, the park rangers refusing to allow anyone out for fear of being struck by lightning. It was another hour before they were finally allowed to return to the cabin.
