PARK BUTTE

Mt. Baker [334 Kb]
|
Most of our hiking in the Mt. Baker region has been on the north side of
the mountain, on either side of the North Fork Nooksack River.
We decided to check out the south side of the mountain on
July 30, 2005 during a week-long stay at our cabin in Glacier.
Park Butte, east of Baker Lake, is probably the premier hike in
that area. The six kilometer trail to the summit of Park Butte
alternates between forest and alpine meadows, with great
views of Mt. Baker and surrounding mountains along the way.
The best views, of course, are from the decommissioned fire lookout
which sits atop the 1661 meter summit of Park Butte.
While looking over some maps after the hike, I realized that Park Butte
is only 21 kilometers from our cabin as the crow flies, but
it was a three hour drive around Mt. Baker to reach the trail head!
