SILVER SPRAY CABIN
|
Silver Spray Cabin [264 Kb]
|
Silver Spray Cabin sits in a high subalpine area near the northeast
corner of Kokanee Glacier Provincial
Park, in the Selkirk Mountains of British Columbia.
Access is via a long dirt road which
leaves the west short of Kootenay Lake near Ainsworth Hot Springs.
The last kilometer of the road is very overgrown and rough.
We did this hike in August 2002.

View from the helicopter pad [669 Kb]
|
From the trailhead, elevation 1340 meters, the trail parallels Woodbury Creek
for about 1.5 kilometers before forking right to ascend out
of the valley. The left fork of the trail continues toward the Woodbury Glacier
area. The trail climbs steeply through dense forest, passing some
old collapsed miners' cabins along the way before finally
breaking into boulder filled Clover Basin.
The trail continues climbing through the basin, finally reaching
Silver Spray Cabin at 2340 meters.
The two story cabin was built in 1994 and,
with room for ten people, is available for overnight backcountry accomodation.
Unlike many cabins,
Silver Spray Cabin is very bright inside thanks to some well placed windows.
We sat in the cabin for about and hour chatting with some local hikers
about other good walks in the West Kootenay area.

Lunch at the col [318 Kb]

The views from the helicopter pad next to the cabin are great.
For still higher views and a glance back in time, a trail continues to climb
from the cabin toward the abandoned Violet mine,
located just below the 2545 m col between Mt. McQuarrie and Sunrise Mtn.
Most of the mine buildings are now collapsed, but numerous old
mining relics are scattered about. Views from the col are
expansive, with the Purcell Mountains beyond Kootenay Lake to the east
and the Woodbury Glacier area at the centre of the park to
the southwest
