Lac du Vieux Emosson [266 Kb]

Lac d'Emosson and Lac du Vieux Emosson are mountain reservoirs
located about twelve kilometers west of Martigny. The dam of
Lac d'Emosson, which can be reached by car, is a scenic
spot with nice views of the lake as well as Mont Blanc
and the Chamonix Needles.
This spot also serves as the trailhead for continuing up to
the higher Lac du Vieux Emosson and the dinosaur footprints advertised
on the highway billboards below.
We did this walk on 22 June 2003.

Glissading down to Lac du Vieux Emosson [153 Kb]

After crossing over the Lac d'Emosson dam,
elevation 1930 meters, the trail
follows a narrow service road up to Lac du Vieux Emosson,
elevation 2205 meters.
From the dam at Lac du Vieux Emosson, a trail contours around the north
shore of the lake before ascending the alpine basin
below Le Cheval Blanc. On the opposite side of the impressive rock
face to the west of Lac du Vieux Emosson is the popular French tourist
area of Sixt Fer-à-Cheval, which we had visited a few months earlier.
We continued up the alpine basin to a 2500 meter ridge with views
to the northeast extending over the Rhône Valley.
Descending back down to see the dinosaur footprints, we found that
these dinosaurs must have been very small their footprints are no
larger than a dog's!
After returning to the car, we drove up the valley to
Chamonix to savor a litre of pale ale at the Canadian-owned
Micro-Brasserie de Chamonix.
