WHATCOM PASS

Mt. Challenger [263 Kb]
|
Whatcom Pass is located near the northern end of the North
Cascades National Park in Washington State. We approached
it in 1976 from Chilliwack Lake on the Canadian side,
reaching the pass after two days and 22 kilometers.
This was an early
season hike, so there was still considerable snow on the
ground at the 1600 meter pass.
The only other person we met on this hike was a park ranger,
who was more concerned about our lack of a back country
permit than the fact we had crossed the border without
passing through a border station. She issued us the
requisite permit and we continued on our way.
The impressive Mount Challenger
is just a few kilometers north of the pass.
Avalanches falling from the Challenger Glacier provide
sound effects to complement the great views.
