HANNEGAN PEAK

Hannegan Peak [229 Kb]

We have often referred to the trail leading to Hannegan Peak as the blackfly trail, in reference to those vicious creatures which often plague this area. It seems that the only choices to evade them are a chemical defence with DEET, which I hate, a bug shirt, which can be rather uncomfortable on a hot day, or by simply trying to out walk them, which is what I usually do. Despite the blackflies, this walk is well worth the effort for the outstanding panorama from the summit of Hannegan Peak, with views of Mount Challenger and the Picket Range, Ruth Mountain, Mount Shuksan, Mount Baker, as well as Slesse Mountain across the border. We've done this walk many times, sometimes as a day hike to Hannegan Peak and other times en route to the Copper Ridge area for extended backpacking trips.

Mount Shuksan [189 Kb]

The trailhead, elevation 950 metres, is at the end of the Hannegan Pass Road, which turns off the Mount Baker Highway just before it starts it's ascent to the ski area. The trail climbs slowly and steadily as it parallels Ruth Creek, steepening slightly just below Hannegan Pass, which is reached at an elevation 1550 metres and 6.3 kilometres from the trailhead. From the pass, the main trail descends the headwaters of the Chilliwack River toward Copper Ridge or Whatcom Pass. A side trail leading north from Hannegan Pass climbs for about 1.5 kilometres to reach Hannegan Peak, elevation 1886 metres.
