ROYAL LAKE

Royal Lake [447 Kb]

Royal Lake is nestled in the dry northeast corner of Olympic National Park. The trail to the lake begins at 770 meters alongside the Dungeness River, but soon veers off to follow Royal Creek through mostly open forest, with an undergrowth of rhododendron, salal, oregon grape, and moss. The trail climbs gently but steadily, reaching level and open meadows below Royal Basin at about 9 km, then steepens again at 10 km for the final half kilometer push to Royal Lake at 1570 meters. A short loop trail around the lake passes several campsites and allows views from all angles of the mountain backdrop across the lake. The trail continues on and up for another kilometer or two beyond the lake to the Upper Royal Basin at the foot of Mount Deception, but neither time nor energy permitted on this late summer day, August 28, 2009.
