Col de Cou [337 Kb]

Col de Cou is a mountain pass in the Chablais region straddling
the border between Switzerland and France.
There are trails leading to Col de Cou from either sides of the
border; we approached it from the French side.
The 1400 meter trail head for the hike is at Le Pas, a tiny resort
at the end of seven kilometer road leading southeast from Morzine.
We did this hike on 27 September 2003.

The route follows a gated dirt road as far as the Chalets de
Fretérolle, then a trail continues the ascent through
rich green pastures. A continuous chorus of cowbells
accompanied us the whole way up.
There were about two dozen birdwatchers gathered at the
1921 meter col when we reached the top.
This area is apparently quite popular among birdwatchers,
and several signs at the col illustrate the various species of birds
that might be seen. This group of birdwatchers, who had come up
from the Swiss side, were quite excited to see an Osprey
soaring overhead.
The Dent Blanches and the Dents du Midi are among the nearby
mountains dominating the view, however the later was obscured
by a blanket of clouds while we were at the col.
We remained for about an hour before walking back
down to our car.
