Campsite at Deer Park [346 Kb]
|
Deer Park is an auto campground located on a high ridge on the flanks of Blue Mountain, in the
relatively arid northeast section of Olympic National Park. Due to its access by a narrow, winding
dirt road, the campground is not frequented by trailers or large camper vans. The short walk up Blue
Mountain, which is visible from my home, provides vistas extending in all directions, including the
Strait of Juan de Fuca and Vancouver Island to the north, and the interior Olympic ranges to the
south. We've also walked as far as
Maiden Peak
along the ridge-top trail which extends to Obstruction
Point. Over the years we've camped several times at Deer Park, and somehow always managed to land in
the same campsite with fantastic sweeping views to the south.
The pictures here are from trips done in 1985 and in 1993.
As evident from the later pictures, the area had recently been swept by a forest fire
which was visible from Victoria.
