MAIDEN PEAK

The Needles [276 Kb]

The eastern end of Hurricane Ridge extends from the road end at Obstruction Point, reaches a high point at Elk Mountain, then descends again toward Maiden Peak, Green Mountain, and Deer Park on the southern flank of Blue Mountain. The open ridge making up Elk Mountain extends more than two kilometers. Maiden Peak likewise is a broad summit, the centre and highest of its three distinct peaks being properly called Maiden Peak. The trail linking Obstruction Point and Deer Park, one of the highest in Olympic National Park, alternates between the ridge crest and the south slope, affording vistas in all directions. The view to the southeast is dominated by The Needles, just beyond which lies Royal Lake where I had been hiking two days earlier.

Green Mountain [326 Kb]

Our family hiked the Obstruction Point to Deer Park Trail from its east end a couple of times in the past while camped at Deer Park, reaching as far as Maiden Peak. I returned on August 30, 2009 to hike to Maiden Peak from the west, thus "completing the loop". The weather was clear but the air was unfortunately murky due to a combination of fog, smog, and smoke from area forest fires.
