FRY CREEK CANYON
|
Fry Creek [211 Kb]
|
Fry Creek drains from the high peaks of the Purcell Wilderness Conservancy
into the east side of Kootenay Lake, about 14 kilometers from the lake's northern
tip. The trailhead is accessed by driving up the west side of Kootenay
lake to the northern tip just past Lardeau, crossing the Duncan River, and
then driving back down the east side of Kootenay Lake, through Argenta,
to the tiny settlement of Johnson's Landing at the end of the road.
The trail parallels Kootenay
Lake for a short distance, crosses into the Fry Creek Canyon Provincial
Recreation Area, then reaches Fry Creek at a bridge crossing about 1.5
kilometers from the trailhead.
The trail into Fry Creek Canyon does not cross the bridge, but rather turns
to the east and follows Fry Creek up its northern bank.

There are no great
mountain vistas here, but the canyon and rapids here are well worth a visit.
Parts of the trail through the canyon were put in place by blasting into the
canyon wall. Although wide and level, this section of the trail requires some
attention as it would be a very steep fall into the rapids below.
The trail is less precipitous beyond the canyon, but still very attractive
as it works its way up alongside the river.
We walked several kilometers up Fry Creek as far as a pleasant riverside
campsite in August 1999.
