Gruyères Castle [192 Kb]

The highlight of a trip to Gruyères in the Swiss canton
of Fribourg is the cheese fondue,
but a walk through Gruyères Castle provides a pleasant
way to work up an appetite, or to work off what one's just consumed.
A cobblestone road winds its way through
the tiny village just outside the castle gates,
which caters to tourists with a good choice
of restaurants (mostly fondue) and gift shops.
The earliest parts of the Gruyères Castle date from
the 13th century, however much of what is seen has been
added in centuries more recent.
Exhibits inside the castle include some contemporary with
the castle as well as some modern.
We've traveled to Gruyères a number of times, but
the pictures shown here are from a rainy day visit on
28 September 2003.
