We drove up to Saas Fee in the spring of 2003 to have a look around this
valley, just 17 kilometers northeast of Zermatt. We browsed around
town for a while before stopping at a restaurant for lunch, enjoying
the views from our patio table. Saas Fee is ringed by mountains, and
the expansive Feegletscher approaches to within 1.5 kilometers.
With no map and no plan
for the afternoon, we found a trail leading up a hillside northeast
of town to Hannig Alp, which proved to be a nice vantage. I followed the
trail to the top of the Hannig lift at 2350 meters, 550 meters above
Saas Fee. The 4545 meter Dom, highest peak fully within Switzerland,
towers above Saas Fee to the southwest, with 4491 meter Täschhorn alongside.
