HIGH DIVIDE

Cat Peak and Mount Carrie [222 Kb]

High Divide is a 1600 meter high ridge between the Hoh and Soleduck Valleys in the Olympic Mountains. Three of us visited the area during the winter reading break in February 1978. I was on snowshoes and the others were on skis. The route we chose, following the Soleduck River, was essentially the same as day 1 of the Crisler Traverse that two of us had completed the previous summer. None of us had a tent large enough to accomodate more than two people, but a friend offered to loan us a "McKinley" style tent, which was a well know style of expedition tent from that era, capable of sleeping four. We set up our camp in Soleduck Park, an open area about 200 meters below High Divide. After setting up the tent we realized that although the tent was shaped like a McKinley, the size was definitely not like a McKinley -- this was only a two person tent. Especially with mid-winter gear, it was a tight squeeze for all three of us to cram into the tent for the night.

The next day we snowshoed (me) or skied (the others) up to the top of High Divide, where we sat for a while and enjoyed the views toward the interior of the Olympics. We could see most of the Bailey Range, which two of us had traversed seven months earlier. Below us lay the 1250 meter deep Hoh Valley, with the Mount Olympus massif rising beyond. After returning to Soleduck Park, we broke camp and decended back down the Soleduck Valley to our car. It was too late in the day to catch the ferry Coho back to Victoria, so we set up a camp and spent the night in the Heart O' the Hills campground just above Port Angeles. The next morning we drove up to Hurricane Ridge for some more snowshoeing/skiing before catching the Coho home.
