MANNING PARK
Manning Park covers the northern end of the Cascade Range in
British Columbia. The Crowsnest Highway, which runs across
the southern end of B.C., crosses through Manning Park over
Allison Pass. The park headquarters and visitors centre are
just a few kilometers east of the pass, where cross country
ski passes can be purchased during the snow season.
The Lightning Lakes cross country
ski area is four kilometers to the west of the visitors
centre. We did this easy ski outing in early spring 1999.

Most of the trails that we took simply follow the summer
campground roads, with little significant ups or downs but
still sufficient to test our meager skills. The temperature
was hovering around 0° C, so snow conditions were
less than ideal. Nonetheless, it was nice to be out in
the mountains on a wintry-like spring day.
After a full afternoon skiing, we had a nice supper in
the restaurant at the visitors centre before returning to
our cabin at Glacier Washington.
