MONICA MEADOWS

Monica Meadows is about six kilometers north of Jumbo Pass in the Purcell Range of British Columbia. Access to Monica Meadows is via the north end of Kootenay Lake. The trailhead, elevation 1810 meters, is reached after about an hour of logging road travel up Glacier Creek. We did this hike in August 2000.

Like the Jumbo Pass trail, the Monica Meadows trail starts ascending through subalpine forest. The lower meadows are reached after about three kilometers near a good camping spot. A faint trail continues up through the meadows passing stands of alpine larch along the way. From the upper meadows, elevation 2285 meters, one can wonder in just about any direction. Several alpine lakes lie just a few hundred meters to the east. Out of site, but just four kilometers beyond the ridge to the east, lies Lake of the Hanging Glacier. Views to the west are dominated by Mount Macduff, Mount Macbeth, and Mount Lady Macbeth, behind which lies the Macbeth Icefield. One can also continue over a low ridge to the northwest to another alpine basin, with Mount Monica directly to the north. Given sufficient time, one could continue on over Starbird Pass for more views to the east.
