Wengen is a small resort town situated on a shelf
500 meters above the Lauterbrunnen Valley in the
Bern Alps. We had passed through Wengen four months
earlier while taking the train from Lauterbrunnen to
Kleine Scheidegg,
and again while walking back down to Lauterbrunnen via Männlichen.
We paid Wengen another visit on a beautiful winter day, February 9, 2003.
Since Wengen has no car access, we drove to Lauterbrunnen and caught the
train, arriving in Wengen shortly before lunchtime.

Slopes below Männlichen [79 Kb]

After a hefty rösti lunch, we spent the next few hours walking
on a wide snowpacked path above town, paralleling one of the several
area ski runs. The path was shared with numerous sledders racing
down the slope, most on traditional wood Davos sleds. We enjoyed
the fresh winter air and the views down to Wengen and the
Lauterbrunnen Valley. We recognized the avalanche breaks on the
steep slopes above Wengen which we had passed while decending from
Männlichen on a stormy day four months earlier.
