BOTANICAL BEACH

Sarah and Maya at Port San Juan [122 Kb]

One of the many Sunday drives we did when the kids were young was the classic South Island Loop, from Victoria to Shawnigan Lake, westward along the Koksilah and San Juan Rivers to Port Renfrew, then back to Victora via River Jordan along the West Coast Road. We had a nice riverside picnic lunch along the Koksilah River before proceeding on, stopping briefly to have a look at the famous bedspring bridge which crossed the deep gorge of Williams Creek. I recalled the first time I drove across that bridge I encountered a large black bear in the middle of the bridge. Our next stop was at Port Refrew and Botanical Beach where we explored the famous tide pools, although the high tide at the time didn't help. We returned home after supper at a small cafe in Jordan River. We drove this circuit in 1986. The bedspring bridge across Williams Creek has long since been removed, make this classic drive unfortunately no longer possible.
