CADBORO BAY AND DISCOVERY ISLAND

Sarah and Michael [158 Kb]

Our local beach at Cadboro Bay is a popular launch site for ocean kayaks. Lots of small coves and rocky islets make the area particularly interesting for paddling. Many of the islets are protected as part of the Oak Bay Islands Ecological Reserve for their seabird colonies and rare meadows. Once out on the water, wildlife sightings are almost guaranteed. Seals, sea lions, river otters, and eagles are all common. Also occasionally seen are orcas and grey whales.

Lying about 1.3 km off Ten Mile Point, which forms the northeastern boundary of Cadboro Bay, are Chatham and Discovery Islands. The waters in and around this archipelago offer superb kayaking. The provincial marine park on the south side of Discovery Island is a popular destination, either for daytime exploring or overnight camping. Much of the other islands are off limits, being either Indian land or Ecological Reserve. Although the crossing to Chatham and Discovery Islands is short, the passage is exposed to southeasterly winds off the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and also experiences strong currents ranging up to six knots. Careful attention to marine weather forcasts and current tables is necessary to ensure a safe trip.
