Meadows along the trail to Three Brother Mountain [556 Kb]
|
Three Brothers Mountain is located in
Manning Park,
about 150 kilometers east of Vancouver.
Access to the trailhead is by the Cascade Lookout road
which winds its way up to alpine meadows just north of the
park headquarters and visitors centre. From the trailhead
at the end of the road, elevation 1980 meters,
the trail descends through sub alpine forest
for several kilometers to a saddle at 1830 meters,
passing the Buckhorn Wilderness Camp along the way. The trail
climbs again after the saddle, reaching vast fields of
subalpine meadows about three kilometers beyond the saddle.
It was for the protection of these meadows from overgrazing by
sheep that the Three Brothers Reserve was first set aside in 1931,
later to be enlarged with the creation of Manning Provincial
Park in 1941.

The summit of the First Brother, at 2272 meters
the highest of the Three Brothers,
is reached about eleven kilometers from the trailhead.
The views from the summit are great. To the south are the
rugged mountains of the North Cascades. In contrast, the
view to the north is of the dry interior plateau country.
It was incredibly windy on the summit when
we did this hike in the summer of 2001 as a day trip from
our cabin at Glacier, Washington.
