OBERHORNSEE

At the far end of the Lauterbrennen Valley lies the tiny tarn Oberhornsee.
By it's own merits it isn't a particularly worthy destination, but the
scenery from trail to the tarn make this one of the finest walks
in the Jungfrau region. With the exception of a couple of alpine
inns along the way, the trail passes through an area which remains
relatively undeveloped and wild. I did this walk on June 10 2006,
when most of the higher trails were still covered in snow.

From Stechelberg, at the end of the road in the Lauterbrennen Valley,
I followed the trail on the valley floor alongside the river Weisse Lütschine.
At 2.5 kilometers the trail passes Trachsellauenen, site of some ancient mining
activities dating back hundreds of years when galena was mined to extract
lead and small amounts of silver. Shortly after Trachsellauenen I followed
the right fork of the trail which ascends about 400 meters to the Berggasthaus
Tschingelhorn in the alp Obersteinberg. The views from the Oberseinberg are
excellent, with Jungfrau and the Schmadribach Falls across the valley and
Breithorn, Tschingelhorn, and Lauterbrunnen-Wetterhorn at the head of the valley.
The trail traverses the Obersteinberg, passing the Hotel Obersteinberg, then
begins the final 300 meter climb shortly after crossing the Tschingel Lütschine
to reach the tiny Oberhornsee at an elevation of 2065 meters.

I descended back to Stechelberg by the same route, enjoying the views down the Lauterbrennen
Valley to Wengen and also up to Gimmelwald and
Mürren as I approached Stechelberg.
I stopped at the Hotel-Restaurant Stechelberg for a dinner of rösti, beer,
and espresso, during which I was serenaded by a chorus of cow bells hanging from
the necks of about a dozen cows being herded past the restaurant on their way up
to their summer pasture.
